This is one of artist Shi Qi’s representative Traditional Chinese Painting works, created and named according to the famous Chinese tale “The Legend of the White Snake”. It’s a love story about a man and a beautiful lady who transformed from a white snake after centuries of practising and cultivating a magical power. Both the fairy tale and this painting praise true, unconditional love, and express resentment toward feudal restraints. The painting shows the two main characters of the legend - the white snake and the green snake - as the objects being described, and uses cool blue as the main hue, creating a strong visual impact with the high contrast of blue and white. This painting accentuates the loyalty of the white snake and the courage of the green snake.

Watch below a short video for an introduction to the artist Shi Qi:
Shi Qi was the first Chinese artist to hold a solo exhibition in the Louvre Museum in Paris. His early paintings were influenced by the traditional Chinese style and achieved great success. However, he didn’t stop there, and began to challenge the limits of the tradition. He incorporated oil painting and applied his deep understanding of art gained from decades of practice to his work, and has created his own unique style, "Incorporating the concrete, the abstract and the impressionist into one". He is not only an outstanding painter, but also a proficient calligrapher and sculptor. He is truly a remarkable contemporary artist.
Shi Qi has published more than 30 painting albums domestically and overseas, as well as holding more than 30 art exhibitions, including the Shi Qi Traditional Chinese Painting Art Exhibition hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, the Shi Qi Oil Painting Art Exhibition hosted by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and nine exhibitions hosted by the Wanda Group both domestically and overseas. Artist Shi Qi was awarded the World Peace Prize by UNESCO and other organizations, the Gold Medal at Le Louvre Museum Art Salon, France, and was twice listed as one of the Top 10 Traditional Chinese Painting Masters of national treasures, published authoritatively by the American International Artists Association.
Shi Qi’s artworks have been highly praised by society since he came to fame in the 1970s. He has created “New Traditional Chinese Painting” courses and taught thousands of students over more than 10 years. He founded the Beijing Shi Qi Painting Academy and trained over 100 artists, and also established “New Traditional Chinese Painting” bases in many provinces of China. In addition to these great accomplishments, he has also taken on the great responsibility of cultivating the next generation of artists.
Shi Qi is a revolutionary artist who is brave enough to challenge tradition, follow his heart, and take risks. His bold and unique style has introduced a brand new perspective. His art is a great contribution to the world.
